- Interactions with the children is the best way to learn. Instead of standing back and observing, move in and talk with the children.
- State suggestions or directions in a positive manner rather than a negative one.
- Avoid trying to change behavior by methods which may lead to the loss of self-respect such as shaming or labeling the behavior as naughty or selfish.
- When a child talks to you, make a definite response. If you are busy, tell him, "I will talk to you in a minute," or redirect him to another adult.
- Use a natural voice, not a singsong one or baby talk.
- Speak slowly and distinctly
- Avoid using too many words or giving too many directors at one time.
- Have a happy face and a pleasant voice. Enjoy the children and they will respond in that manner to you.
- Be kind and firm when redirecting an inappropriate behavior.
- Do not be afraid to interact with the children or to help when you believe your help is needed.
- Avoid making art models for children to copy.
- Remember, the important thing is the process children go through to create their art and their play, not the completed products.
- Do not be upset if a child does not respond to your approach. Discuss this with the teacher.
- If you are unsure about something, please ask us. We all learn through questions.
